Dreamworld 3-26
Although Dreamworld Music Complex in Arlington is not the best venue in the
area, they do often have some killer line ups. This night was an example. Lord
Slugg started the night off with their version of metal. I would not know how to
classify this properly except by saying it reminded me of Weird Al Yankovich
doing his impression of a metal band. With song titles such as "Monkey Sex" and
"I Eat Cheeseburgers" and nicknames Skillet, Chico, Mudbone and Loco, it is hard
to take this band seriously. They do not lack orginality, however, and have
acquired a loyal following of sluggheads who mosh on the floor and also on the
stage with the band once they finish their last song of the set. Metalcore band
Beneath the Black Sky then came on with a much heavier set. These Tyler guys are
gaining a reputation and playing shows with bands such as Jacknife and
theDestro. After this show, I can see why. Another band properly labeled as
Texas brutality. Deviant played a great set, not th
at I have ever witnessed anything less from these guys. What can I say about
them except I love them. The more I see them, the more I am impressed. Talent
comes in many forms from these guys. Whether playing Iron Maiden covers or
doing guitar solos comparable to DimeBag Darrell, Deviant is a band not to be
missed live. Even if you don't mosh, you will feel inclined to during one of
their shows. Kwik Buddha stepped up to follow Deviant. A unique sound with two
bassists and one guitarist. The front man, Derek, even offers a little extra
entertainment with kicking his leg up and putting it behind his head. This band
has a great attitude and you can tell by their live performance. Six bands total
played, leaving the top two slots to none other than Low Gear and Stillborn
Nursery. Two of the top acts in the area right now, they play awesome shows
whether in front of 500 people, or in the case if this show, 50. Low Gear's
addition of Chris Key on vocals and guitarist J is
the best move they could have made. An amazing performance by every single
member of the band. Chris has an in-your-face style and is a natural performer.
Gotti is killer on the drums. Muck and J on guitars are a great pair, and with
Goat on bass, this band is finally developing their potential. What metal band
can actually pull off a cover of Prince's "Sexy Motherfucker" except for Low
Gear. Not only can they pull it off, it has become a hit song of theirs, along
with every other one of their songs. "Get Pancho", "Thin Skin", Perfect Pervert,
and another cover song-Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus"-are apart of the typical
LG show and I never get sick of hearing them. Not many bands can successfully
follow Low Gear, but Stillborn Nursery can. One look at this band and you can
just tell they are going to be good. One song from this band, and you know they
are going to be a nationally recognized band in the very near future. No matter
if the sound quality of the venue is po
or, the crowd is small, and the night has been long, this band always exceeds
their expectations of being a local band. They announced the upcoming Ridglea
Metalfest to be their cd release party, and gave the crowd a tease of the new
material mixed in with the old. As always, they ended the show with their
popular song, and as I left Dreamworld, I was still singing "This is my america,
FUCK YOU!"
